Redondo the No. 2 seed in Division 1 of CIF-SS girls volleyball playoffs

The Redondo Union girls volleyball team finished the regular season second in the CIF Southern Section ratings, and on Saturday it received the No. 2 seed in the Division 1 playoff bracket.
The top four teams — No. 1 Sierra Canyon, Redondo, No. 3 Mater Dei and No. 4 Marymount — all have first-round byes and will start the playoffs in the quarterfinals Oct. 28.
The Division 1 bracket has returned to the standard single-elimination format after three years of using a pool-play format.
Mira Costa (23-9) slipped to fifth in the final CIF-SS ratings. The Mustangs will play a first-round match Wednesday, hosting Newport Harbor. The winner advances to face Marymount.
The Mustangs didn’t face Newport Harbor in the regular season and lost to Marymount in five sets.
Redondo Union will host San Juan Hills or Los Alamitos in the quarterfinals. The Sea Hawks didn’t face San Juan Hills during the regular season and lost to Los Alamitos in five sets.
Division 2
Del Rey League champion Bishop Montgomery was No. 18 in the final rankings, the next highest team from the South Bay after Mira Costa and Redondo Union.
The Knights (20-5) will host Desert Empire League champion Xavier Prep in Tuesday’s first round.
El Segundo (12-5), which finished third in the Bay League, will be on the road against Murrieta Mesa, the second-place team from Southwestern League.
Division 3
South and North Torrance finished tied for the Pioneer League title and both landed in Division 3.
South (25-9) is the top seed and will host St. Joseph, the third-place team from the Del Rey League, in Wednesday’s first round.
North (25-8-1) will host Agoura.
If South and North both win in the first two rounds, they could meet in the quarterfinals. South won the first match with North in four sets and North won the second match in five sets.
Division 4
Peninsula (16-9) received an at-large berth out of the Pioneer League. The Panthers will be on the road Tuesday against Santiago Corona.
West Torrance (17-12), the third-place team from the Pioneer League, will host 605 League champion Cerritos.
Division 5
Chadwick (18-18), which finished fourth in the Prep League, will open on the road Wednesday against Kennedy, the second-place team from the Empire League.
Division 6
Wiseburn Da Vinci (15-14), which finished fourth in the Pioneer League, was seeded fourth in Division 6. The Wolves will host Oxnard on Tuesday.
Division 8
St. Mary’s Academy (15-11) will host Omega League champion Lighthouse Christian on Tuesday. The Belles tied for second in the Santa Fe League.
Vistamar (9-8) will host Patriot in the first round. The Vikings tied for second place in the Coastal League.
Division 9
Lawndale (9-8), which finished fourth in the Ocean League, will host CSDR in the first round Wednesday.
Mulholland League champion Ambassador Christian (17-8) will be on the road Wednesday against Loara, the third-place team from the Grove League.
Division 10
Animo Leadership (8-14) will be on the road Tuesday against Bassett. The Aztec Eagles finished fourth in the Mulholland League.
